Yoga became popular in the West due in great part to the work of Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar. B.K.S Iyengar evolved a precise system of postures (asanas) and breathing techniques (Pranayama) firmly based on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Through the intelligent use of support ('props') when needed, and a carefully graded teaching system, he made Yoga accessible to all, regardless of age, fitness levels or ability. Guruji iyengar dedicated his entire life to Yoga, through uninterrupted, unwavering practice. He taught throughout the world and generously shared his insights with students at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, where he lived, and in his numerous visits to the West, including North America, the U.K., South Africa and more recently China. Iyengar Yoga allows everyone to learn in a safe and progressive way. His method of teaching enphasises correct action and absolute safety. Students begin by learning asanas including Savasana (relaxation) and mor complex poses are introduced gradually as their understanding develops. As students progress in their practice, they move into more refined ways of working and learn more complex asanas. After some time and inaccordance with the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Pranayama is introduced. |
All Iyengar Yoga teachers are trained to rigorously high standards.
After training regularly for a minumin of three years (in practice often much longer), candidates undertake a two-year long teacher training programme, followed by the Introductory Level 2 assessment. Once qualified, teachers must continue training regularly and undergo professional developmenttraining each year in order to maintain their membership of the Iyengar Yoga Association U.K. (IYA UK). In this way the care and precision that characterises Iyengar Yoga is maintained. These high teaching standards are part of the reason Iyengar Yoga is the most widely practised method of Yoga wordwide.
